Seventy-seven runners and walkers took on an epic stair-climbing challenge at Watford FC’s Vicarage Road Stadium on Saturday 5 July – a fitting number to mark the 77th birthday of the NHS.
Organised jointly by West Herts Hospitals Charity and Watford FC’s Community Sports and Education Trust, the Step Up challenge aims to raise funds for projects that go beyond what the NHS alone can provide.
Participants of all ages tackled the stands of the 20,000-seater stadium, with a shorter route available for children. Eleven-year-old Ethan was the first to complete the half route, while 14-year-old Khaden stormed home as the fastest on the full adult route, completing it in just 17 minutes. Khaden said: “It was difficult but good at the same time!”

The money raised will help us fund projects that improve patient care and enhance staff wellbeing. The event was sponsored by Skechers and featured a lively warm-up at the pitch-side before the climb.
All participants received goody bags featuring items such as a CMR Surgical water bottle, a Starbucks cup, and a Prime drink. Children’s bags also included an activity pack and book. Generous donations of water and cereal bars came from local supermarkets, including Morrisons in Watford, Tesco’s in Rickmansworth, Tesco Extra in Watford and ASDA in Watford.
