Players from Watford FC and Watford FC Women made a special surprise appearance at Watford General Hospital on Wednesday 17 December, bringing festive cheer and early Christmas gifts to the Starfish Children’s Ward.
Watford Women’s midfielder Anna Filbey joined central defenders Mattie Pollock and Max Alleyne to meet with young patients and their families, offering a welcome distraction for children facing a stay in hospital over the Christmas period.
The visit was a highlight of our ‘Christmas Smiles’ festive gift initiative for patients who are staying in hospital over the Christmas period.
For one young patient, Alyana, the visit held a deep family connection. Alyana’s grandmother, who was by her bedside, shared that her late husband was a lifelong, avid Watford FC fan, making the surprise meeting with the players an especially meaningful experience for the family.
Mattie Pollock, Watford FC defender and our charity’s ambassador, said:
“We’re just going around the hospital and seeing all the kids and giving them presents and just trying to make their day a little bit happier.”
During the visit, the three players spent time chatting with patients, posing for photos, and thanking frontline NHS staff for their year-round dedication. The players distributed a wide variety of age-appropriate gifts, ensuring every child on the ward had something special to open.
Anna Filbey, Watford FC Women midfielder and our charity’s ambassador, added:
“My highlight was just putting smiles on their faces and hearing the stories of the parents and how tough it is, and being able just to spread a little bit of joy.”
Max Alleyne, Watford FC defender, said: “We are here to give some Christmas presents to some of the children and hopefully cheer them up, make their day, and spread some Christmas spirit.”
