Thank you to Mike Irvine, who completed the Brighton Marathon on Sunday 12 April 2026 in a moving tribute to his late mother, Bunty Lysbeth Irvine.
Bunty was a familiar face at West Herts Hospitals over the years. At 92 years old, she was incredibly resilient, notably surviving COVID-19 while in hospital in April 2020. Following a fall at home, Bunty spent the final five months of her life under the dedicated care of the teams at Watford General Hospital and the St Peter’s Ward at Hemel Hempstead Hospital, before receiving end-of-life care near her home in Nash Mills.
Following her passing in December, Mike decided to take on the 26.2 mile challenge to keep the memory of his mother alive and to give back to the hospitals that supported her throughout her later years.
A Tribute to Resilience
Mike shared that his mother faced many health challenges, including heart disease, but always showed great strength. Despite the difficult period of organising a funeral and managing legal affairs, Mike remained committed to his fundraising goal.
The funds raised will support our hospitals in continuing to provide the care that Bunty received. We are proud of the achievement of Mike and grateful for his support during such a personal time for his family.
