A special space for families who experience the heartbreaking loss of a baby has opened at Watford General Hospital following a fundraising appeal by West Herts Hospitals Charity, in partnership with the hospital’s maternity bereavement service.

The room now features a double bed, a comfortable environment for families to grieve, and an area to prepare drinks. Books for families and siblings, along with hand and foot casting services, provide lasting memories and coping resources.
Supporters of the maternity bereavement room were invited to see the Rose Room for the first time, which provides a dedicated area for families to reflect and support each other.
In the UK, one in four pregnancies ends in miscarriage, and every day 17 babies are stillborn or die shortly after birth. The death of a baby is devastating for parents, families, and the staff who support them. Watford General Hospital’s maternity bereavement service has been running for eight years, offering vital support to families during their most difficult times.

Samantha Behagg, Lead Bereavement Midwife at Watford General Hospital (pictured above second right), said: “We meet families during the worst imaginable times, and having a dedicated space like the Rose Room is invaluable. Thanks to generous donations, we’ve been able to create a more comforting environment for parents to spend precious time with their baby and begin to process their grief. Additional fundraising has enabled us to provide special bereavement books for families and siblings, which has been especially impactful, helping to guide them through their loss. Thank you to everyone who contributed – your support has made a real difference.”
Our CEO Alison Rosen said:
“We are incredibly grateful to our community and supporters for their generosity in helping to transform the Rose Room. This space will provide solace and comfort for grieving families, offering them a place to create lasting memories and begin their healing journey. On behalf of the hospital and the charity, thank you for your kindness and compassion.”
The appeal raised over £40,000, with contributions from a JustGiving campaign launched by the Bereavement Midwives, which raised over £10,000, as well as significant donations from 4Louis, who support families through miscarriage, stillbirth and child loss, The B&Q Foundation, Barratt North Thames and other generous supporters.
Continued fundraising will ensure the Rose Room remains a comforting space, providing bereavement books for families and siblings and 3D hand and foot casting services to help provide lasting memories.
